How to set up a wireless LAN
Enter the router by opening IE and typing the address of your router (usually an IP address such as 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, sometimes http://www.routerlogin.net or http://www.routerlogin.com with some makes, e.g. Netgear), enter username (admin) and password (password).
Under Wireless settings:
- SSID: HOMEWIRELESS (or something unique like your name)
- REGION: UK (or the country you are in)
- CHANNEL: 7 (default, but this can be changed to fine tune your signal)
- Allow Broadcast Of Name (SSID)
- Allow Access From "Any" Name
- Make sure both check boxes are checked.
- Skip Wireless Card access list
- Authentication Type: Automatic
- Encryption: Disabled
- The rest is blank.
- Click on Apply.
- Go back now and click on The Wireless Card access list button. Make sure it is NOT turned on.
- Apply.
Go to the wireless machine.
- Go to the control panel
- Open Network connections.
- Right click your Wireless connection.
- Click on the advanced tab
- Make sure the firewall check box is NOT checked.
- Click on the wireless networks tab
- Make sure the top check box IS checked.
- Make sure HOMEWIRELESS (or your unique SSID) is under the available box.
- Remove everything if anything under preferred.
- Click on HOMEWIRELESS (or your unique SSID) under Available.
- Click the configure button next to the available box.
- In this window make sure nothing is checked then click OK.
- HOMEWIRELESS(or your unique SSID) should now be under preferred.
- Click on OK and you should now be connected to the Internet.
After these steps all your computer should be connected to the internet, if they are not then restart them and they will work properly.
At this point, with established wireless communications it is worthwhile turning wireless security functions to scure the connection.
